A Little Piece of Heaven: Van Dusen Botanical Gardens

The Van Dusen Gardens are located in a residential area of Vancouver at 37th and Oak Avenue. Originally owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway, the land was originally a group of stumps in 1910. The Shaugnessy Golf Club leased the land until 1960 when it moved its location. In 1966 the Van Dusen Botanical association was formed. The Vancouver Parks Board wanted to save the site and keep it as green space. Together with the government and the city the land was purchased with the assistance of Whitford Julian Van Dusen, a lumberjack and philanthropist.
