Vancouver Seabus History

When the Lions Gate Bridge to the North Shore was built in 1938, the ferries lost business. The advent of the automobile had taken people off the Seabus and into their cars.   Then, World War Two made people tighten their belts. People sold their cars and business on the ferries picked up. Soon there were five ferries- in 1940 over seven million passengers were ferried across the Burrard inlet.

The automobile became popular once again the in 1950 and passengers declined. Some were taken off duty transported to other locations and one was even converted into a restaurant. One sunk and then there were none. In 1977 due to increased residents on the North Vancouver the Seabus was officially inaugurated.

There are three Seabuses working all the time. Each ferry can take 400 passengers and take approximately 12 minutes to cross the inlet. Departures are every 15 minutes during the daytime and every 30 minutes in the evening.
