Go Fish: Fishing in Vancouver

Fishing isn’t what one normally thinks about in the big city- but it’s possible in Vancouver! Vancouver is one of the few cities in the world where you can go fishing; you can actually cast a line, catch a fish and eat it! When the earliest settlers and explorers arrived, they discovered there was abundance in fish that was equal to the abundance of gold. The First Nations peoples have been eating fish for thousands of years. Rivers, lakes and the ocean make for endless fishing options.

Salmon fishing is available in Vancouver all year around. There are many river systems around the city and therefore there is a large population of salmon.  The Fraser River empties out into the Strait of Georgia and is one of the largest salmon producing rivers in the world! There are sites for salmon within 10-20 minutes of the city, which is ideal for beginners or those who don’t wish to stay out for hours on end.

Vancouver Fishing Charters

Most charters offer fishing or sightseeing if fishing isn’t your thing. Charters are available directly from the city, just head down to Granville Island or Coal Harbour.

There is a large variety of fish to be caught in the Vancouver and surrounding waters - salmon, rockfish, shellfish and trout.

Popular areas for fishing around the metropolitan area of Vancouver are: Horseshoe Bay, Capilano River, Rice Lake, Stanley Park Seawall, the Burrard Inlet, and West Vancouver.

Horseshoe Bay is a small village that is also home to one of the ferry terminals. There are many docks as well as chartered boats that service Bowen Island and Howe Sound. There is also plenty of fishing at Whytecliff Park and nearby Lighthouse Park.

The Capilano River is a popular spot in West Vancouver, particularly for anglers. The Capilano River is the natural boundary between North and West Vancouver. There is fabulous scenery and a nearby fish hatchery. Coho and Chinook salmon are plentiful, and it is very busy in the summer. The hatchery offers free admission and is a great educational experience. The Cleveland Dam is upstream also offers free picnic areas if you fancy a meal out of doors. Both the dam and the hatchery are easily accessible by transit or by car.

Children might also enjoy Rice Lake, also in North Vancouver. Perfectly situated near the Seymour demonstration forest, this small lake is stocked with rainbow trout. The docks are also wheelchair accessible.

The Stanley Park Seawall is also a great place to fish. Just walk along the wall, pick a place and cast off!

Here are some pointers for first timers:
-Determine how long you want to spend fishing; this will help you decide on where to go.
-Fishing licenses are required in BC for salt and fresh water fishing.
-If you are chartering a boat, make sure they supply life jackets –they are mandatory in BC.
