Turn out and Tune in! : The Vancouver Folk Music Festival
By Melissa Montgomery
The Vancouver Folk Festival is held every July at Vancouver’s Jericho Park. It encompasses a large area of the park and has 8 stages of folk and world music. The festival began when Mitch Podolack, the creator of the Winnipeg Folk Music Festival was looking westward and thinking about starting a folk festival on the west coast. Originally located in Stanley Park, the festival was moved after its first year to Jericho Beach in the West Point Grey area of Vancouver.
Even though it poured with rain, the first Festival in 1978 at Jericho Beach was attended by 11,000 people. Staffed almost entirely by volunteers, many who had driven out from Winnipeg at their own expense, they fumbled and bumbled their way through various problems and made sure the festival was a success. Since then it has grown exponentially and today the festival is world renowned and has an attendance of over 30,000 concertgoers, 1200 volunteers and runs over a three day period.
The lineup for 2010 is as eclectic as one could imagine: from Argentina to Morocco, from North Carolina to Calcutta there are music and musicians from all over the world. If ancient nomadic music from Southern Siberia and Mongolia is your thing: check out the band Namgar. The band performs on traditional Mongolian instruments and also tells legends of the fairies and nomadic horsemen as part of the show.
If you want something a little bit more mainstream, Ontario’s Sarah Harmer is performing on the main stage. Back after a five year recording hiatus, Sarah‘s music is better than ever. New to the scene is California’s Brett Dennen, who many are dubbing as the next Woody Guthrie. Catch him at the Folk Festival before he becomes too famous!
The festival also features Shane Koyczan- the spoken word master responsible for bringing spoken word to the masses. His band, The Short Story Long, blends folk and funk, humor and tragedy in a show not to be missed. The Vancouver Folk festival is also pleased to welcome Bettye LaVette, also known as the ‘Great lady of Soul’. She has been recording hits since she was a teenager.
The festival also features food and the largest summer outdoor Bazaar in the city. If you don’t want to go into the festival, you can walk down the beach next to the festival ( for free) and browse the many tents that sell everything from felt briefcases made in Nepal to jewelry made right here in Vancouver. There is an artisan market inside the festival which gives priority to local artisans. As well, there are numerous tents selling food and beverages. There are activities for children as well; a corner of the festival called ‘Little Folks’ offers on art, face painting, water works and a free play area for little ones who just want to play.
The festival is accessible by bus and note: there is limited parking in the area which is mostly residential. It is wheelchair accessible and this year HandiDart is offering service to and from the site.
Tickets for the festival are available at many locations in Vancouver go to: http://thefestival.bc.ca/
