History of Moncton
Moncton is located on the Petitcodiac River 50 kilometers from the Bay of Fundy. Petitcodiac in Micmac means, ‘bend like a bow’ and Moncton lies right on the area where there is an acute bend in the river. The area was settled in the 1670’s by the Acadians. The area was farmed and called le Coude (the elbow). In 1755, Fort Beausejour was captured by the English who were under Lord Robert Monckton. The Acadians were expelled and the river came under control of the English. Moncton grew and with the advent of the industrial revolution became a service based economy with shipyards and railways. The town known as ‘The Bend’ became incorporated as city in 1855 and was named after Lord Monckton.
Moncton has grown thanks to the railways and today has a population of 125,000. Its main industries are agriculture, forestry, fishery, transportation, retail and IT. Moncton also has a large tourism industry because it is a hub for activity in the Maritimes and it is naturally beautiful. The tidal bores from the Petitcodiac River are rare : this is when a tidal wave travels up the river as a result of extremely high tides.
Also of interest is Magnetic Hill, an optical illusion or gravity hill. A magnetic hill is a place where the topographical layout of the surrounding land produces the optical illusion that a very slight downhill slope appears to be an uphill slope.
When the automobile was invented and motorists learned they had to accelerate when going ‘down ‘ the hill to keep from going backwards, the hill got its name, Magnetic Hill.
